“So you’re not having a coed bridal shower?” Brian asked Joe on Friday afternoon. The two officers sat in the break room at the police station, drinking coffee before starting their shift.

“The operative word here is bridal.” Joe chuckled. “Anyway, I don’t think my sister ever considered a coed shower, for which I’m grateful. She already had to cancel once, so even if I wanted a coed shower, I wouldn’t mention it now.”

“I have to admit, I’m looking forward to tomorrow night. Sounds like there’s going to be some good food there.”

“Glandon can afford to throw a big party.”

“Hey, it’s Johnson, remember,” Brian chided.

“Wow, you really have changed since you started dating Heather.” Joe took a drink of his coffee.

“I thought you considered Chris a friend now?” Brian asked.

“I do. But sometimes it’s a little difficult not to feel… well… for example, you know how Kelly and I are trying to buy another house, and even with me selling mine, I’m not sure we can afford what she wants. Chris never worries about any of that stuff. Hell, none of them do. Look at Marlow. He came to Frederickport with nothing, not really. Marries Danielle and all her money, and then writes a damn bestseller and falls into more money.”

“I like Walt,” Brian said.

“Yeah, I know you do. But I also remember what a jerk he was when he first came to town. And yes, I understand he’s a different man now. But I often wonder, what happens if he someday gets his memory back? Will he turn back into the man he used to be? For Danielle’s sake, I hope not. Because I know she’s happy.”

“I don’t think we have to worry about that,” Brian said.

Joe shrugged. “I suppose. But well, there is still one thing that bugs me about him.”

“What’s that?”

“The way he dresses.”

“The way he dresses?” Brian laughed. “I didn’t know you were so fashion conscious.”

“You know why,” Joe grumbled.

“Kelly still trying to get you to dress like Walt?”

“Not as much. But I hate going clothes shopping with her, because she always finds something that Walt would probably like, and she tries to get me to try it on. Seriously, do you see me in one of those long overcoats? People would think I’m in the Mafia.”

“Well, you are—”

“Don’t say it,” Joe snapped.

“Good, you’re both here,” the chief said when he entered the break room.

“Are you heading home?” Brian asked.

“Yeah, in a few minutes. I wanted to tell you I just heard from the guy I’ve been talking to in Canada,” the chief said.

“Is this about Charlie?” Joe asked.

“Yes.” The chief sat at the table with Joe and Brian. “The DNA on the toothbrush matches Charlie’s. They also found his DNA on the dirty clothes from the duffel bag. There was also a shaving razor in the bag with some blood on it. That also matched Charlie’s DNA.”

“What about the body?” Joe asked.

“I’m not sure they’ll be able to get DNA off the remains. Not only were they severely burned, but the chemicals that exploded may have contaminated them.
