âSo youâre not having a coed bridal shower?â Brian asked Joe on Friday afternoon. The two officers sat in the break room at the police station, drinking coffee before starting their shift.
âThe operative word here is bridal.â Joe chuckled. âAnyway, I donât think my sister ever considered a coed shower, for which Iâm grateful. She already had to cancel once, so even if I wanted a coed shower, I wouldnât mention it now.â
âI have to admit, Iâm looking forward to tomorrow night. Sounds like thereâs going to be some good food there.â
âGlandon can afford to throw a big party.â
âHey, itâs Johnson, remember,â Brian chided.
âWow, you really have changed since you started dating Heather.â Joe took a drink of his coffee.
âI thought you considered Chris a friend now?â Brian asked.
âI do. But sometimes itâs a little difficult not to feel⦠well⦠for example, you know how Kelly and I are trying to buy another house, and even with me selling mine, Iâm not sure we can afford what she wants. Chris never worries about any of that stuff. Hell, none of them do. Look at Marlow. He came to Frederickport with nothing, not really. Marries Danielle and all her money, and then writes a damn bestseller and falls into more money.â
âI like Walt,â Brian said.
âYeah, I know you do. But I also remember what a jerk he was when he first came to town. And yes, I understand heâs a different man now. But I often wonder, what happens if he someday gets his memory back? Will he turn back into the man he used to be? For Danielleâs sake, I hope not. Because I know sheâs happy.â
âI donât think we have to worry about that,â Brian said.
Joe shrugged. âI suppose. But well, there is still one thing that bugs me about him.â
âWhatâs that?â
âThe way he dresses.â
âThe way he dresses?â Brian laughed. âI didnât know you were so fashion conscious.â
âYou know why,â Joe grumbled.
âKelly still trying to get you to dress like Walt?â
âNot as much. But I hate going clothes shopping with her, because she always finds something that Walt would probably like, and she tries to get me to try it on. Seriously, do you see me in one of those long overcoats? People would think Iâm in the Mafia.â
âWell, you areââ
âDonât say it,â Joe snapped.
âGood, youâre both here,â the chief said when he entered the break room.
âAre you heading home?â Brian asked.
âYeah, in a few minutes. I wanted to tell you I just heard from the guy Iâve been talking to in Canada,â the chief said.
âIs this about Charlie?â Joe asked.
âYes.â The chief sat at the table with Joe and Brian. âThe DNA on the toothbrush matches Charlieâs. They also found his DNA on the dirty clothes from the duffel bag. There was also a shaving razor in the bag with some blood on it. That also matched Charlieâs DNA.â
âWhat about the body?â Joe asked.
âIâm not sure theyâll be able to get DNA off the remains. Not only were they severely burned, but the chemicals that exploded may have contaminated them.
